Tilbury House was founded in the 1970s as a publisher of New England—themed literature, poetry, arts, culture, history, and how-to books. The Tilbury House list of books for adult readers grew to 75 in-print titles prior to the list’s acquisition in 2022 by Rowman & Littlefield, the parent of Down East Books and other imprints.

Today the exclusive focus of Tilbury House is the award-winning list of children’s books that we began building thirty-five years ago. We publish fiction and nonfiction picture books with themes of cultural diversity, social justice, mindfulness, science, nature, and the environment. We also publish information-rich board books and highly regarded nonfiction books for middle-grade and older readers. Together with educators who are specialists in their fields, we offer imaginative, user-friendly guides for many of our books. These free guides — available on the Classroom Guides page of this site — include activities and discussion points along with links to additional information and resources.
In 2022 we became a sister imprint of Sleeping Bear Press in the Cherry Lake Publishing Group.
